Proven in Policing. Designed for the Workplace.

The Active Diffusion Strategies training program is grounded in proven de-escalation principles that have been successfully applied by law enforcement officers for nearly two decades. Officers trained in L.E.A.D.S.™ (Law Enforcement Active De-escalation Strategies) have consistently demonstrated improved communication, enhanced decision-making under stress, and reduced reliance on force during high-risk encounters.

These techniques were developed, tested, and refined in high-consequence environments where failure carries significant personal, legal, and organizational risk. The same principles that help officers safely manage volatile, emotionally charged encounters are directly transferable—and ideally suited—to civilian workplace settings, where conflict often escalates due to miscommunication, emotional dysregulation, and unmanaged stress.

Active Diffusion Strategies translates these field-proven methods into a civilian-appropriate framework focused on prevention, early intervention, and risk reduction—making it especially relevant for Human Resources, Risk Management, Safety, and Organizational Leadership.

Why This Matters to HR & Risk Management

From an HR and risk perspective, unresolved workplace conflict increases:

  • Employee injuries and workers’ compensation claims

  • Harassment and hostile work environment complaints

  • Employee turnover, absenteeism, and lost productivity

  • Civil liability and reputational risk

Active Diffusion Strategies provides practical, defensible tools that help organizations:

  • Identify early warning signs of escalation

  • Intervene before conflict becomes violent or litigious

  • Improve documentation and decision-making

  • Demonstrate proactive risk mitigation and due diligence

Key L.E.A.D.S.™ Components That Directly Apply to Civilian Organizations

The following core elements of L.E.A.D.S.™ form the foundation of Active Diffusion Strategies and are highly effective in civilian environments:

1. Emotional Regulation Under Stress

  • Understanding how stress and emotion impair communication and judgment
  • Techniques to slow escalation and regain cognitive control

2. Effective Verbal Engagement

  • Strategic language selection to reduce defensiveness
  • Tone, cadence, and phrasing that promote cooperation rather than resistance

3. Behavioral Recognition

  • Identifying pre-incident indicators and escalating behaviors
  • Recognizing when to intervene, disengage, or seek support

4. Conflict Framing & Perspective Management

  • Separating emotion from behavior
  • Reducing “us vs. them” dynamics in difficult interactions

5. Decision-Making & Accountability

  • Making reasonable, defensible decisions in real time
  • Aligning actions with organizational policy and expectations

6. Post-Incident Reflection & Documentation

  • Improving communication after conflict
  • Supporting HR documentation, investigations, and corrective action processes

A Risk-Reduction Investment, Not Just Training

Active Diffusion Strategies is not about teaching civilians to “act like police officers.”
It is about applying proven de-escalation science—successfully used by officers in the most challenging conditions—to everyday workplace interactions where conflict, emotion, and miscommunication can quickly create risk.

This training represents a proactive, defensible investment in employee safety, organizational culture, and liability reduction.

L.E.A.D.S.  Law Enforcement Active De-escalation Strategies

This is a classroom-based combat-confrontation avoidance course based upon the L.O.C.K.U.P. ® System. It teaches within a classroom setting how to recognize aggression and not stimulate aggression. Students learn communication skills, force mitigation strategies, psychophysiological and evidence-based Active De-escalation Strategies that can avoid or resolve interactions by employing tactical de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution methods and distraction techniques, and force mitigation strategies that promote successful tactical applications.  The course also discusses tactical responses when diffusion tactics are inappropriate or ineffective. This program teaches officers how professional communication can protect officers in the field, and reduce civilian complaints as well as civil litigation.  Instruction uses lectures and demonstrations to facilitate learning and retention.

The L.E.A.D.S. – Law Enforcement Active De-Escalation Strategies training has been instructed throughout the United States.  Agencies under a Federal Consent Decree have had the L.E.A.D.S. curriculum reviewed and approved by the United States Department of Justice to be delivered to the officers.

In 2022 the FBI National Academy Associates
presented
Science and Innovation Award to the L.O.C.K.U.P. Arrest and Control System and L.E.A.D.S. Program.

The selection committee unanimously selected Lt. Dillon’s L.O.C.K.U.P. Arrest and Control Training and L.E.A.D.S. Law Enforcement Active Diffusion Strategies Training Systems over all other nominees as the recipient of the award.

The selection committee unanimously selected Lt. Dillon’s L.O.C.K.U.P. Arrest and Control Training and L.E.A.D.S. L.E. Active Diffusion Strategies Training Systems over all other nominees as the recipient of the award. The L.O.C.K.UP. training differentiated itself from other Defensive tactics programs being instructed throughout the country. L.O.C.K.U.P. is not a technique-based training system but the emphasis is on the actual collection of data on the use of force incidents, and detailed reporting to determine the effectiveness and needs assessments of the officers on the street.”

We all need Active De-Escalation ,Conflict Resolution and  Diffusion Training. Body language communication is innate, interpersonal communications and de-escalation are trained and learned behaviors.   While fatal workplace violence receives considerable attention, non-fatal violent incidents occur far more frequently and affect a substantial number of workers each year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2020 there were 37,060 non-fatal workplace injuries resulting from intentional injury by another person, indicating the prevalence of violent encounters that do not result in death but still cause harm and trauma on the job. Additionally, data from broader workplace violence research show that over one million non-fatal violent victimizations occur annually in U.S. workplaces, including aggravated assaults, simple assaults, and other forms of interpersonal violence. These figures illustrate that workplace violence—both fatal and non-fatal—is a significant risk for workers nationwide and underscores the need for active conflict resolution and de-escalation training.

KFD Training and Consultation LLC has been providing Active Diffusion Strategies and conflict resolution training to law enforcement and civilian organizations since 2004.
