Immediate Active De-Escalation Strategies
Instructional Goal:
This is a classroom based confrontation avoidance / conflict resolution course. Based upon immediate interpersonal conflicts it teaches within a classroom setting how to recognize aggression and to not stimulate aggression. Students learn Active De-Escalation Strategies that can avoid or resolve interactions by employing conflict resolution tactics, de-escalation methods or distraction techniques that promote successful tactical applications. Instruction uses lectures, demonstrations, scenario building and role play.
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS:
- Identify professional benefits of active de-Escalation strategies.
- (Reduction of civilian complaints, developing community support and personal safety).
- Value of customer “customer” service for security professionals.
- Understanding to the 3 C’s of Conflict Resolution.
- Understanding psycho-physiological changes during aggression and how it applies to communications.
- Learn methods to re-direct the thought process through positive direction.
- Learn terminologies to build subconscious feelings of alliance.
- Learn methods of motivational interviewing skills to develop agreement.
- Anger management and suppression techniques.
- Identifying indications of hostility through body language.
- Learn methods of effective verbal de-escalation strategies.
- Understanding the value of empathy in communications.
- Learn to use cognitive limitations for active diffusion.
- Learn to deploy active listening skills to enhance communications.
- Learn positive methods of communications, both verbal and non-verbal. (What is YOUR body saying?)
- Learn how to avoid communications that may be negative.
- Learn about neurological shortcuts to the limbic system to signal alarm.
- Learn concepts of “change blindness” and “inattentive blindness” and how they apply to safety.
- Learn and develop optional responses when de-escalation is not effective.
- Learn stalling tactics for backup options.
- Learn disengagements strategies and techniques.
- Learn physical control and defense techniques (Optional)
