This nationally recognized, award-winning conflict resolution and de-escalation instructor certification course was developed in 2007 and is currently being implemented by agencies across the United States.  The L.E.A.D.S.™ Plus T (Law Enforcement Active De-escalation Strategies – Instructor program is designed to prepare instructors to teach effective communication, de-escalation, and conflict resolution techniques specifically tailored for law enforcement  and correctional professionals. This classroom-based program includes lectures, demonstrations, role-play, and scenario-based exercises to ensure participants can both perform and teach the material.

The course focuses on identifying and defusing aggressive behavior before it escalates, offering actionable strategies to manage confrontations, reduce complaints, mitigate liability, and improve relations. Additionally, it covers tactical options when de-escalation is not feasible and introduces distraction techniques to support safe and effective resolution of incidents.

Participants will learn to:

• Recognize the professional benefits of respect in all interactions
• Apply anger management techniques during high-stress situations
• Employ proven verbal de-escalation strategies
• Strengthen community empowerment and engagement
• Understand the physiological and cognitive changes during aggression
• Redirect hostile behavior through positive communication techniques
• Effectively engage with special populations (e.g., mental illness, autism, disabilities)
• Use motivational interviewing to promote cooperation and compliance
• Implement tactical relocation and stalling strategies to delay confrontation
• Build lasting community partnerships through daily contact
• Conduct breakout sessions and facilitate role-playing scenarios
• Integrate communication and physical tactics to resolve encounters safely
• Understand the role of de-escalation in litigation and legal review
• Apply adult learning principles and instructional methodologies for classroom and scenario-based instruction
